The rear drive shaft is a mechanical component that transfers torque from the engine/transmission to the rear axle.
The cost of a used rear drive shaft can range from $125 upwards of $300-$400 for later model vehicles. Nevertheless there are considerable savings over new OEM parts and higher quality than aftermarket.

The measurement of the rear drive shaft is very important to know. Make sure yours is exactly the same as the donor vehicle.
If the U-joints are serviceable then make sure they are greased. If they are replaceable and have slack in them, then be sure to do that. Make sure no dings are in the tube (visual inspection). Also verify if it has a slip yoke, that it’s smooth and there is not a groove in the shaft from premature wear.
No special maintenance other than what is called for in your manual.
